Modernization of drying kilns at the Ust-Ilimsk Branch of Ilim Timber
The modernization project of three existing single-zone Valmet kilns (commissioned in 1984) at Ust-Ilimsk Branch of Ilim Timber into modern dual-zone continuous tunnels was successfully completed during the second half of 2018.
According to the results of the tender, Vaultec (Finland/Sweden), one of the largest developers and manufacturers of modern technological equipment for drying timber, was selected as the supplier of the new equipment. The introduction of advanced technologies through the modernization of outdated technological equipment and the commissioning of such drying kilns opens up new opportunities for Ust-Ilimsk Branch of Ilim Timber. There will be increase in the productivity of the drying area, improvement in the quality of products (especially wide boards), the possibility of drying lumber to the final moisture content (12-15%). Production process will become more flexible due to the ability of the new equipment to dry sawn timber of any sections and species.
“During the implementation of the project it was decided to combine the new technological solutions of Vaultec with old components of Valmet drying kilns. Some companies that initially participated in the tender did not believe in the success of such concept. However, specialists from Ilim Timber and Valutec successfully completed modernization. March 1, 2019 the modernized block of two-zone kiln tunnels from Valutec started its commercial operation. Currently, sawmill specialists are working hard to develop the drying modes for the entire range of products. We already see a positive result in increasing productivity and improving the quality of finished products. As soon as we obtain full data on project results a decision will be made to further modernize the remaining drying capacities of the sawmill,” said Viktor Melnik, Investment Director.
